About Us

The primary function of any Fire Department is firefighting and fire protection. The NMVFC proudly protects residential and commercial complexes as well as thousands of acres of forest. We are equipped to handle all types of fires, be it structural, motor vehicle, or even liquids in a tank such as propane and natural gas. Our water supply comes from a combination of on-board tanks, lakes, ponds, and underground water tanks throughout our response area. The NMVFC, like many other rural departments also relies on mutual aid from neighboring departments for additional water supply and extra man power. We also respond to any of our neighboring departments to provide whatever assistance is needed when called. Some examples of mutual aid include water supply from our 3,000 gallon tanker, Rapid Intervention Teams for downed firefighter rescue, or simply providing back up coverage at their stations while their personnel are busy. We frequently participate in drills with Madison Hose Co. #1, Guilford, Durham, Killingworth and Clinton.

In addition to providing fire protection services, we provide many other functions to the citizens of Madison. At motor vehicle accidents, we perform extrication with the Jaws of Life, mitigate hazards from fluid spills; and provide care to the injured. We assist the Police Department with traffic control at accident scenes, allowing them to complete their investigation

We are equipped to respond to emergencies in the woodlands of North Madison. This includes assistance to an injured or lost hiker or rescues from lakes and ponds. We have a full compliment of topographic maps of the area and handheld GPS units. Our brush fire truck and utility pickup truck are both very capable off-road vehicles. Our John Deere “Gator” all-terrain vehicle has been modified for off-road rescue and medical care. We have the support of the Madison Police Department for use of their ATV to assist us in accessing deep woodland areas. We have a Zodiac rescue boat, ice rescue sled, and cold water rescue suits to support water rescue incidents.

Since 1996, the NMVFC has been an Emergency Medical First Responder to North Madison. Many of our members are trained as Medical Response Technicians or Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). All of our apparatus are equipped with a complete supply of medical equipment. Our rescue truck, serving as the primary medical response vehicle, can provide lifesaving emergency care before the ambulance arrives. Each truck is equipped with Automatic Defibrillators. Early defibrillation is critical in a cardiac arrest. Our services allow support to be on scene in just minutes. Upon arrival of Madison Ambulance, we assist with continuing care and loading the patient for transport. See EMS Section for more information on the EMS response program!

We participate in many other activities aside from emergency responses. Our members visit the elementary schools to teach children about fire safety and what to do in an emergency. At our annual Fire Station Open House, we sponsor the Fire Safety trailer. This teaches children how to get out of a smoke –filled building. Students can even practice dialing 9-1-1 and learn how to respond in an emergency situation.
